Reunited for the only time after their triumph in Mel Brooks' the Producers, Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel catapult their shared genius for elegant slapstick, wit and sly satire to a level of fearless absurdity that virtually no other comedy team would dare approach. Director Tom O'Horgan, originator of the Broadway smash hit Hair, transforms playwright Eugene Ionesco's Theatre of the Absurd curio Rhinoceros into a fluid, character-rich comedy that the Hollywood Reporter dubbed, quot;an excellent film.quot; in the face of a modern urban life devoid of anything but an uninterrupted parade of dehumanizing compromise and disappointment, Stanley (Wilder) tenuously guards his fragile individuality in between gulps of booze. The only solace he enjoys is commiseration with his self-consciously sophisticated neighbor John (Mostel), and his unspoken adoration of a warmly sympathetic co-worker Daisy (70s cult object Karen Black). But as a surreal comic apocalypse begins to transform, one by one, everyone into a rhinoceros, the non-conformism that seemed like Stanley's downfall may be his only salvation. Re-creating the role he originated on stage, Mostel delivers the most jaw-droopingly bravura performance of his career, playing off both Wilder's and his own incredulous terror as the fussy, prissy John metamorphoses (entirely without make-up or camera tricks) into a bellowing rhinoceros. Mostel, Wilder and Black's generous characterizations and pitch-perfect comic timing streamline Rhinoceros' convulsive outrageousness into an ardent valentine to both knockabout screen comedy and lonesco's experimental and timely satire.

An Official Selection at both the Cannes and New York Film Festivals, Raoul Ruiz's Time Regained performs the remarkable feat of bringing the work of Marcel Proust to the screen. With brilliant execution, Time Regained realizes the mixture of space and time, of image and memory, which flows throughout Proust's multi-volume quot;Remembrance of Things Past. quot; Aided by an outstanding cast of international film stars, including Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich, Emmanuelle Beart, and Vincent Perez, Ruiz has made a glowing reverie on a passing age that both overwhelms and entertains. Time Regained (the title of Marcel Proust's last volume) opens in 1922, as Proust is on his deathbed, looking through photos and remembering his life. Gradually, we watch as his own experiences give way to the characters in his novel - fiction eclipses reality. Ruiz, with incredible visual dexterity, shows how the author's creations combine with his own experiences, like slides projected on to the wall of his room. Memories of the idyllic days of the lost paradise that was Proust's childhood alternate with rich recollections of his life in fin de siecle Parisian society. The drama of the Great War, examined in the context of spectacular soirees and grand parties, becomes in Ruiz's hands an elaborate comedy of manners. In Time Regained, Ruiz discovers the impossible-the intangible timelessness that was the object of Proust's novels, blending both the baroque and the surreal. The result is a montage of moving snapshots and feverish dreams that makes the film the ultimate in Proustian cinema, succeeding magnificently where other adaptations of his work have failed. Enriched by stellar performances, Time Regained is a quot;gorgeous, meticulously crafted spectaclequot; (Jack Matthews, NY Daily News) that is presented here for the first time, in letterboxed format.

Liliom is Fritz Lang's (Metropolis, Die Nibelungen) dazzling 1934 film that has until now been nearly impossible to see in the U.S. Starring Charles Boyer (Algiers, Gaslight) just before hitting major stardom in Hollywood, Liliom is a captivating noir fantasy. Brash ne'er-do-well Liliom, played by Boyer with physical gusto and inner uncertainty, is a carnival barker until he encounters the ethereal Julie. Their spellbound union is based on her unwavering faith in him. Liliom is overjoyed to learn he will become a father, but his efforts to find money for his family end badly. When twin dark angels bring Liliom to a fantastic tribunal in the heavens, his story is contradicted by a filmed replay of his past. Years later, he is brought back for one day to do something good. An uncanny encounter with his daughter leads to a beautifully abstract resolution of his destiny. After leaving Nazi Germany, Lang stopped in France long enough to make one film, Liliom provides intriguing glimpses of later magical realist films from Cocteau and Powell/Pressburger, and of the surreal transcendence of Borzage, who had filmed Ferenc Molnar's play in 1930. Rogers and Hammerstein later transformed it into the hit musical Carousel.

Utilizing the same brilliant cast as in Celebration's original highly acclaimed Royal Court Theater run, director Lindsay Anderson (O Lucky Man, If) re-imagines his stage triumph into a riveting cinematic experience. Anderson grounds David Storye's ferocious and poignant drama in a setting that is as realistic as the playwright's caustic portrait of generational hypocrisy is universal. In their tiny house in a Yorkshire mining town, God-fearing and hard-working Mr. And Mrs. Shaw (Bill Owen and Constance Chapman) welcome their sons home to celebrate the couple's fortieth wedding anniversary. But with each son's arrival, more and more of the Shaw's model blue collar family facade begins to chip away. Middle son Colin's (James Bolam) engagement has placed him on the pat to a loveless marriage. Barely shouldering the burdens of his shattered artistic aspirations and his own family, Steven, the baby, brilliantly played by Brian Cox (Man hunter, 25th Hour), is on the threshold of a nervous breakdown. But the toaster tossed into this already scalding theatrical bath is Alan Bates (Georgy Girl, the Cherry Orchard) as eldest son Andrew. As father, mother and brothers futilely try to hide the truth from themselves and each other, Bates' Andrew tears into the Shaw family's carefully maintained fictions with animal fury and all too human bitterness.

Comic, melancholy, ribald and hallucinatory, 25 Fireman's Street is both a groundbreaking entry into the New Hungarian Cinema of the seventies and a timeless, intoxicatingly rich moviemaking triumph. Director Istvin Szabo (Mephisto, Sunshine) masterfully evokes everything from Borges to Bruel to Proust as he freely blends rich characterizations with visionary surrealism and kitchen sink realism. On one hot summer night, the residents of a Hungarian apartment house slated for demolition restlessly revisit their haunted pasts as they face an uncertain future. In a gently turning kaleidoscope of dream imagery, regret-laden nostalgia and painstakingly intimate detail, the looming wrecking ball pales in significance to the accumulated experience each dreamer revisits. Pre-war prejudice, occupying Nazis and Stalinist deprivations all come and go as each tenant's backward glance yields moments of aching sensuality, infectious exuberance and catastrophic loss. Through an affirming cascade of poetic wanderings through lives lived to the fullest, 25 Firemans Street plots a personal map of Hungary's fortunes from Hapsburgs to the Soviets. Conjuring up a canvas of recent Eastern European history to create a tapestry of personal histories shaped by war. Combining sure-handed storytelling with visual enchantment, 25 Firemans Street marries the whimsically ethereal with the tragically concrete. Presented here for the first time on DVD, Kino on Video proudly offers an unforgettable cinematic nocturne that has remained as inspiring and innovative as it was upon first release in 1973.
