Verified Purchase

Irwin shank bits are a favorite. The quality allows use on older surfaces with precision cuts. Also, it is more convenient getting these at Walmart with a lower cost than a big box store. Have three sets and no problems with any.

Best bit for OSB that I've found

A one-tooth hole saw works pretty well in OSB (sub-floor & I-joist web), but for smaller holes all the bits I tried, including some designs that are no longer made, will at some point get an OSB flake caught between the cutting edge of the bit and the bottom of the hole and the bit will just spin without cutting. Maybe it's just me, because I searched the web for a solution and didn't even see the problem mentioned. Not the greatest all-around bit in the world, but it does one thing well that no other bit seems to be able to do. For plumbing and electrical work these are great. They're relatively inexpensive - so it's not the end of the world if you hit a nail or screw. I also use these for going through studs, etc using a battery operated drill with a clutch. Not the fastest method, but safer.

What were they thinking????

For hundreds of years, wood working tools have had spurs to cut across the grain of wood. Saws have ATB, Stanley Planes have replaceable spurs on most of their rabbet and panel raising planes. Without spurs to cut the grain, wood grain rips, tears, and splinters. Someone at Irwin has disregarded the hundreds of years of development and removed the spurs from the Speedbor drill bit.. BUT.WHY????? They converted a great tool into a worthless, dull piece of metal that beats it's way through wood. What were they Thinking?????
