Love the drink (but not the price)
You'll either love it or hate it! "An acquired taste" and "Distinctively different," It's hard to describe because Moxie isn't your average sugary-sweet pop. It has been described as having "a bitter aftertaste that some say is similar to root-beer." The soft drink's unique herbal, slightly bitter flavor stems from gentian root, a botanical typically used to make cocktail bitters, such as Regan's and Angostura Gentian root is a bitter substance common in herbal medicine that can supposedly help cure ailments from sleeplessness, to digestive issues, to feebleness(esp. of the mind) ... Invented in 1876, Moxie was the first mass-produced soft drink in the U.S. In fact, the beverage predates Coca-Cola by a decade ( at one point, even surpassed the iconic beverage in sales) . Moxie's popularity declined during the Great Depression after the company drastically scaled down advertising .(Originally sold as a “nerve food” in 1884) >>>Moxie was designated the official soft drink of Maine on May 10, 2005. Each year, on the second Saturday of July, tens of thousands of Moxie enthusiasts from across the U.S. descend on the village of Lisbon Falls to celebrate the beloved beverage . New England state has been hosting the Moxie Day Festival since 1984 . . . > Moxie soda actually wasn't initially marketed as a sipping soda. It was supposed to be good for the nervous system. It started as an elixir that was said to cure things including “softening of the brain” and “loss of manhood.” To nobody's surprise, the FDA was not having those claims. In the early 1900s, the department said that Moxie could no longer be marketed as medicine, so the pivot was made to sell the already-carbonated beverage as soda
