They are automatic

They have a flicker feature, which I love. I like that I can turn them on and off by remote. The one thing I didn't realize, is that they have a timer and turns them back on each day. I used them with my Christmas decorations and it was nice to not have to remember to turn them on. I am thinking of leaving them out year around. Also, I have not had to change the batteries yet.

Very nice in carriage lamps

Put in outdoor carriage lamps, unprotected from rain except for what lamp provides. Doing fine. I received no instructions but by trial and error found that timer only works if you use the remote to turn them on - the switch below the candles must be on also.
