not as expected

so, we bought of these to replace an older, aged cabinet. we were disappointed, to say the least. this review is based on construction, materials and value for money spent. nothing more. let's start with the packaging. it was definitely packed well. solid, lots of foam to protect it. so, the chances of it being damaged in transit aren't very night unless it literally fell off a moving truck. the parts were clearly labelled and were in good shape. you could actually smell the chemicals they used on it. there were no scratches, no dings or damage. so again, packing was excellent. plus, the finish seems to be pretty durable. we shall see though. all the parts were there, so that was nice. they were all also labelled clearly so finding them according to the instructions was simple. the materials. here's where we wind up in a bit of a dilemma. they used 1/2" thick mdf particle board. now, it's not BAD to use that type of product, but 1/2" just isn't thick enough when you're seating screws into it. it has the habit of splitting. now, they did pre-drill everything. so, there was that. the panels for the doors and side panels for the unit itself were made with extremely thin plywood. at least I THINK it's plywood. it could be thick cardboard. either way, it feels extremely cheap. when you close a door, you need to wonder...is the panel going to break? the hinges are sunk into this 1/2" mdf. so, due to the thin-ness of the material, they don't seat far. so, something tells me the hinges aren't going to last long. we're not rough with our furniture. but these hinges aren't sunk well due to the material. so, we shall see but I forsee having to come up with a creative way to re-attach the doors sometime soon. the rear panel is either very thick card, or very, very thin plywood. the back is probably the most disappointing part due to this. it is nice to see metal handles, hinges and other hardware. not a spot of plastic anywhere. so, that's a good thing. BUT, they used the same silver screws to mount hinges, the handles, etc. that they used elsewhere where they couldn't be seen. so, they stick out quite a bit against the aged bronze or whatever the handle colour is supposed to be. the instructions are pretty clear, well though out. no real issues with assembly. took me, alone, about 2 hours to assemble one from start to finish. it would be a good idea to have a second person, but if you're handy and capable you should be able to do it alone. overall if I was going to buy some new cabinets again, I wouldn't purchase these. due to the flimsy materials and lack of thought towards aesthetics regarding matching screws to colour it just isn't a good deal. they just aren't worth what the seller is asking.
