These speakers were purchased to replace a similar pair of speakers that I purchased in 1987, 29 year old floor models, 3 way, bass reflex, 15" woofer, 5" midrange 3" tweeters, however 29 years later, it's amazing to find that you can still buy floor speakers with the very same design, however, these have BETTER frequency response specs, just be warned, in order to experience the FULL effect of how powerful these are witl bass in particular, you can NOT hook these up to a "modern day" surround sound receiver but you MUST connect them to a standard AMP or stereo receiver, preferably 100 watts per channel or more, you CAN connect these to a surround sound receiver but you just wont get the full bass that these can deliver, however they do sound GREAT on a surround sound receiver as well. Also, BASS is fantastic on a standard receiver, NO sub woofer necessary but mid range and highs are fantastic as well, crisp, loud and accurate!! My 1987 powerhouse speakers almost identical to these were $200.00 each, now these are available for $139.00 and FREE shipping to store. Be warned, they are HUGE, so if you drive a 4 door sedan like mine or smaller, be prepared to make two trips to the store when you pick these up, as most sedans are only going to hold one at a time, if you have a pickup truck, SUV or minivan you should be fine. The wood quality is also fantastic as well as the cloth front screens. I must repeat though, if you hook these speakers or any large MUSIC speakers up to your home a/v surround sound receiver you may be disappointed, but this is the fault of the industry not the speakers, surround sound receivers are POOR for music only listening (CD, Vinyl etc) but when even connected this way these will still give you fantastic sound. For those of you that have only listened to your music with a surround sound receiver and sub woofer I encourage you to try a 100 watt per channel or higher STEREO amp/receiver NON surround sound, simply because you cannot appreciate what large 15" woofers in a bass reflex speaker system like this can do unless you have heard it!!! surround sound receivers with sub woofers fall very short of being able to deliver music,,, if you hook these up to a tru stereo amp you will get thumping club quality sound.
