this is perfect for the desk Very easy to put together and the shelves can be removed if you decide you dont need all 5 sections. There's plenty of room between each opening, I'd say about 3 inches or more. Its quite sturdy %26 overall a nice file tray. I wouldn't put a hard back book on it, but I have put a spiral notebook on the top with no problem. I would definitely recommend. I think it will last a long time and much classier than the old plastic type
