TAKING CHANCE (DVD/FF-4X3/ENG-SP-FR-PORT SUB)

Based on the true experiences of Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl, who wrote eloquently of them in a widely circulated 2004 article, "Taking Chance" is a profoundly emotional look at the military rituals taken to honor its war dead, as represented by a fallen Marine killed in Iraq, Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Working as a strategic analyst at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, Lt. Col. Strobl (Kevin Bacon) learns that Phelps had once lived in his hometown, and volunteers to escort the body to its final resting place in Wyoming. As Strobl journeys across America, he discovers the great diligence and dignity in how the military, and all those involved with preparing and transporting the body, handle their duties. Equally important, he encounters hundreds of people affected by Chance's death, a vast majority of whom never knew him. This collective grieving eventually causes Lt. Col. Strobl, a veteran of Desert Storm now assigned to office duty, to probe his own guilt about not re-deploying to Iraq for the current conflict. Arriving in Wyoming, Lt. Col. Strobl completes his catharsis when he encounters Chance's gracious family and friends, and discovers an extraordinary outpouring of community support.

Bearing Witness - A Featurette That Includes Interviews with Chance Phelps' Friends And Family As well As A Section On The Real Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, The Real Chance Phelps - Interviews, Home Movies And Personal Photos To Help Paint A More Vivid Picture Of This Hero, From Script To Screen - A Featurette On How Taking Chance was Made, From Concept Through Production, Deleted Scene - I'll watch Over Him.

Taking Chance (starring Kevin Bacon) is another film that I am lucky to have snagged at my job for just five dollars. Kevin Bacon plays the character of Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl who volunteers to escort the body of the late Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Lt. Colonel Strobl is depicted as a character who takes his job very seriously and is simultaneously a loving husband and father for his wife and kids. He is shown naturally feeling guilty at not having went overseas and is reassured by an impartial local in Wyoming that he is actually fulfilling an important role by escorting Chance Phelps home to his family. There is also a heart string pulling scene where Lt. Colonel Strobl is meeting a young marine who is escorting the body of his dead brother who also died in combat. The end of the dvd shows the following life chronology of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps 1984-2004. The Special Features to the dvd of Taking Chance are Bearing Witness, The Real Chance Phelps, From Script to Screen, and a Deleted Scene.

My kid's dad was in the military and as a military family, we lived among the military community for many years. But long before my realtionship with their dad, I was always very patriotic, wanting to make the military a career myself. That was not to be. In April 2004, my nephew was killed in Iraq. He was also very patriotic and had wanted to serve in all 5 branches of the military. He had already served in the Navy, he was killed active duty Army. When I watched this movie, I cried - silently, then loudly, long and hard. With each step of Chance's journey home, I became more and more proud to be an American. I am honored not only by Chance's service but by the service of the many men and women who have served or are currently serving. Thank you for the blanket of freedom your service has provided. To the families that have lost their sons and daughters while they served our country, my sincere condolences and my deep felt appreciation. I have 2 children now, 1 of which's desire is join the Marines. I am so blessed to be a woman, to have felt life and to have given birth to life. As any mom would tell you, my kids are extraordinary. While watching the special features - the photo clips of the real Chance - it was as if I was looking back at the growing up years of my own son. My son is also a history buff and he too desires to become one of America's finest - an American soldier.

Yes, Marines do take care of their own. And this is testament to that. It will give you great insight to the Marine Corps values that are instilled in every Marine, present and former.

This movie is amazing. It should be shown in schools as part of American History or Civics Class. It is a realistic account of how a soldier that was killed in combat, was prepared to travel home for burial, and the man that accompanied his body. The respect that is shown for the fallen soldier and his escort by civilians that are encountered along the journey is very touching. It renews ones patriotism, and brings a new view to the military. I LOVED IT!!!!

    • A. CHANCE is the name of a fallen Marine in Iraq. A superior office volunteered to accompany his body back to his family. It was heartwarming to see the respect and attention given by all who met the officer and body along the way. A real eye-opener. Everyone will enjoy the tribute.

    • A. This is based on the true story of a Marine Lt. Colonel that escorts the remains of another fallen Marine Lance Corporal home for burial. It shows the respect and courtesy of all the people he encountered on this trip across country. This silent service happens nearly everyday and a friend of mine performed it for another fallen sailor just recently. I highly recommend watching the movie.

    • A. This HBO movie is based on the journey of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl. He volunteered to escort a fallen Marine's remains home to his family. It depicts the process, the respect and the honor bestowed upon our fallen soldiers. Something the general public never sees.

    • A. The body of a 19-year-old marine named Chance, who was killed in action in the service of his country, is escorted to his hometown. The film reflects the dignity, honor and respect he deserved. I would encourage every American citizen to see the film and try to always honor the fallen heroes he represents.
