Good basic plane. With just a bit of setup, you can get nice shavings with this. From hard experience, I know that this is the minimum quality workable plane. Any cheaper and you'll be dealing with parts that don't quite fit together, non-working lateral adjuster, a handle that cannot be made firm, uneven sole, crappy top clamp, etc.

It was everything I expected it to be. Worked perfect right out of the box. However, I did have to sharpen it as a precaution as per the direction to insure a better experience. It performed better after the sharpening for a better cut and results.

Don't change!
I really fell into the Stanley plane world with the older #5 planes. I've restored a few. I purchased a Makita power tool designed to sharpen plane blades. It works for chisels....and some other edged blades. This NEW (2025) plane is made with the same care and quality of plane made for the last 100 years. In a strange way it is really neat to see a plane in brand new form. Shiny!
