You get a huge flame for such a small pit. The flame goes up to 1 foot high. I would've preferred it if it didn't flame up that big, but I can't complain. I'm glad I didn't get a bigger pit. I'm using it with Solo Stove hardwood pellets and works great, lasts long. No smoke tip: If you want to add more pellets after your first fire goes out, don't put pellets in immediately, unless there is still a flame going. Put in your starter first, it should light on its own since the pellets are still glowing hot, then put additional pellets in. If you put the pellets in first and there's no flame it will start to smoke. Starter: I'm using Masterbuilt Fire Starters (it's all natural and inexpensive). You only need 1/8 of the cube for a Mesa Tabletop. You would only need to use a full one if you use it in an actual pit.
