great product, but did not last as long as expecte
I bought this router about 4 years ago when i first got gigabit internet. The router worked great, and all the setting/readycloud were fairly easy to use and understand. I do a lot of game server hosting, and port forwarding with it was never an issue. however, about 3 years into owning it the 5GHz antenna died. it would constantly drop connection and signal, and slowly deteriorated until 5g was useless, and even turned off. (and yes i updated to newest firmware, factory reset and everything else i could think of. this is unfortunately not a very uncommon issue.) I was disappointed, but continued to use just the 2.4GHz band, and had no issues. Until about another year passed; at which point the 2.4g antenna followed the same fate. i had retired it to being an access point not too long ago, but now it can not even handle that. again, great product for the first 3 years. i do not know how common this issue is, but i have seen many people with the same experience. if you plan to replace/upgrade after about 3 years, then it is probably a very good router for you to choose.

wifi drops
I've had this for a bit over a year and have several NG products (eg., Two powerlines). Wifi drops several times throughout the day. Support has been less than helpful.

Replace the old technology!

I had an older router and my wifi to my computer and streaming to my TV would keep dropping out; I blamed the cable company! I replaced the old router with the Netgear router and it seemed to have fixed the problem, I'm just sayin.....

Wonderful upgrade to our home network

Our ISP supplied us with a Technicolor TG588v modem/router. It had pitiful wifi signal strength anywhere beyond a few feet from the device.

Finally grabbed a new Netgear AC1900 and wow, what an improvement. Now I've got great wifi speeds and signal strength even way out in the backyard.

The router was very easy to setup. It even downloaded the latest firmware right away to stay current.

Very pleased with this Netgear router. Highly recommended.

Excellent little device

Purchased at Walmart. 1/27/2014 $199.98 This device replaces a Cisco router. Set up for this device is extremely easy. It's very powerful device too. In fact, when it resets the reset signal is powerful enough to interfere with my over the air TV antenna. During normal operation though I've had no challenges with interference. The app that you can download for your devices is very useful. You can do almost all of your router maintenance from the app. I don't have to log into the router via a webpage very often at all. The media drive feature and the turbo transfer has been a little awkward set up and going. It "works", but it's just not as convenient as I would like. Every once a while connection to the Internet gets intermittent and we have to reboot the router. However, that happens every month or so and it's not enough of an annoyance to significantly impact my rating. We have 20+ devices that connect this particular router. My wife and I work at home via VPN connections. We have teenagers too that do a lot of video streaming. Monthly we push close to 100 GB of data through the router with no issues to speak of. We had previously moved to Cisco because of some challenges with our previous routers from Netgear. However, this one seems to have won us back!

Great for today's multitude of devices

My network was crashing and lagging constantly. After juggling 3 old routers and trying setting up extenders or dual networks I decided it was time to upgrade finally. What once worked was failing as my family and technology grew. Essentially I had too many wireless devices. This nighthawk fit the bill exactly and is handling my household perfectly. It is currently providing for 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 android phones, 3 dlink cameras, 360, PS3, 1 appletv, psp vita, laptop, surface and Directv all wirelessly while also networked to two tplink 8 port switches that have about 10 devices hard lined, which on "game night" has 3 ps4's or xboxones playing online together. We are a gamer family and this nighthawk has held up extremely well. I've had it for little over a month and no problems yet. Seriously recommend this and as with any router do the extended warranty as I've never heard of a router that doesn't fail with serious use, at least peace of mind on expensive equipment for cheap, believe I paid 19 for 3 years, which to me is a no brainer. Almost forgot, the iPhone/iPad app works great for maintaining your network and can even reboot remotely when adding on. 5ghz ac, 2.4 ghz, and guest networks of each. Range was huge upgrade over my old as well.

Excellent to realize full bandwidth

I had trouble's achieving the full bandwidth thru comcast. I had comcast to my home several times, blaming them for the issues. Long story short, the problem was my brand new wireless router. Although a cheaper netgear, it just didn't perform well enough to get me the 50MB speed that comcast was promising. As soon as I plugged this in, my bandwidth jumped over 50MB where it was supposed to be. We stream netflix, while the kids play xbox and now notice not lagging or problems. Although a bit pricier than most, it was worth it to get the full bandwidth we were paying for from comcast. I would highly recommend for gamers and video streamers...

Superb WiFi Router - worth every penny!

After dealing with a half-dozen wimpy wireless routers this unit is a breath of fresh air. Easy to setup and ROCK SOLID. Forget having to reboot your router every few days - this thing never misses a beat. Noticably faster with mobile electronics with a longer range and better signal strength. Yes, it does cost more but reliability is worth it. Gamers will drool over it. Technicians will rely on it. Videophiles will praise it. Mobile users will take it for granted ;-) You'll be satisfied when family members stop complaining about the router locking up. Works great with OpenDNS for extra Internet Safety. RB

Easiest to install/use, no issues, and fastest!

This is my third Netgear router in a row and unless they drop the ball I will probably never switch. I have yet to have any problems or connection issues with any of them. I am a power-user when it comes to computers, but Netgear is completely plug and play. I have had belkin, cisco, and Linksys routers and all of them have had problems or just didn't plain work at all (Belkin). This router is super-fast with almost nil lag time (microseconds you won't even notice)! Combine the speed, reliability, and ease of install and there isn't a better router company out there right now. PS> Other than free beta-testing of video games, I have no affiliation with the electronics industry.

ISP can't keep up with this router.

Excellent Router. So far My basement wifi went from 45%-68% signal strength Windows (WNDR4500) to 90% in the basement. (Nighthawk)Dining Room 100% Living Room 100% Too bad ISP can't keep up. But I am getting 117(wired)50-60(wireless) MBPS on Mediacom's Best in Clearlake, Ca. Region. This is a pricey router, but it is well built. Unless this stops performing, I will be very happy with this router five years from now.

The device is good...even for large homes.

I brought this item several years ago. I had other routers before this router. It is the best one. I purchased for parental controls and range of service - it's better than a service provider unless you want to pay more. The only issue that I have is the clock daylight savings time feature is not work. I had 20 devices on it at one time. Other features are good. Getting the Gear Head Support Warranty is a sound investment.

1. Yes
by HDRH
2. yes or have an existing one
by technologysnob
3. Yes. I have Charter router is included in bill, not a separate rental.

4. Yes. This is not a modem also.
by Fungramps
5. well it depends normally you have 3 types of internet the first is cable. where you have a coaxial cable running to a box the modem supplied by your internet company. so the modem is provided normally by your internet supplier and you pay a fee to rent it every month it is normally included in your internet bill. so what you would do is the modem normally only has a few ethernet jacks but the router plugs into the modem to give you wifi and all the other stuff the router offers. the example above also goes with the other types of internet like dsl and satellite so the simple answer is no you do not need to buy a modem with this but you do need to keep your existing modem. it goes like this internet company provides the modem you run a ethernet cable from the modem to the router. now you have wifi for the entire house if you have a desktop near the router it is best to use a ethernet cable to plug the desktop into the router for more reliable connection. i hope i have helped answer your question some but if you do not currently have internet at all then you will want to call the internet provider for your area to get internet installed and they will provide a modem. also for any modem questions it is always best to call your internet provider.

2. Yes, this router will work with any of the major ISPs; modems are the devices that accept cable inputs, routers just split up the signal.
by CommunityAnswer
3. Not sure. I had a linksys wrt54g that worked great on Comcast for 7 years but always needed to be reset when i went with Charter. Up to 10 times a day. I bought local in case I needed to take it back.
by An anonymous customer
4. yes a router will work with any type of internet service provider. the router simply plugs into the modem by a ethernet cord and gives you wifi and multiple ethernet jacks. now if by support you mean they can answer question about the router then no but as far as will it work with time warner cable then yes. you will run the supplied cable with this router to the modem and then follow the instructions.
by underthedome
5. Yes. This router is widely supported by all ISP's.

2. This can support more than 12 devices.

3. this is a router for networking and giving multiple devices access to Internet or resources within a network. Not sure if this will work for you unless you give a bit more information on what your goal is.
by DemonSTi
4. haha nice question. looking at the specs of the router i don't see why not. i think the real question is if your internet speed can keep up with all the gaming. the phones and the tv don't really use much internet apart from streaming video. so that leaves us with just the 3 computer aspect and world of tanks which i have played is mostly installed on your harddrive and only sends data as of where you are and stuff so with this router i would say yes yes yes it should handle your gaming needs. and if not just take it back lol its walmart. :) i wish i had this router i would love it. mainly to use as a wireless home server. but i got dumb dsl internet :( so ill wait till google fiber comes to my area if ever. happy gaming.
