Chase Phillips, a chronically depressed, emotionally exhausted mother finally hires a helper while she attempts to recover in a tiny cottage upon Martha's Vineyard where she stays with her sons. The helper is the much younger Elizabeth. At first, Chase despises her and treats her terribly. Elizabeth refuses to be broken by the barrage of verbal battering as she is intimate with the problems of the mentally ill. Elizabeth's sister is in an asylum and treats her worse than Chase does. Elizabeth takes it for as long as she can, but one night breaks and blows up at Chase, forcing the ailing mother's depression to abate. Eventually Chase gets better and things are fine until she drops a bomb on the family and formally declares her love for Elizabeth. Sandra Brennan, Rovi
Academy Award(R) nominee Helen Mirren, along with Kyra Sedgwick and Beau Bridges, stars in "Losing Chase," an original drama that marks the directorial debut of actor Kevin Bacon. This moving story follows the intimate relationship between Chase Phillips (Helen Mirren) over the course of one summer on Martha's Vineyard. As Chase recovers from a nervous breakdown, she and her children are cared for by a 20-year-old mother's helper, Elizabeth (Kyra Sedgwick), hired by her husband, Richard (Beau Bridges). Richard spends most of his summer at work in Boston, returning to the island only on weekends. At first Mrs. Phillips mercilessly bullies Elizabeth, until, in a verbal showdown, the girl finally stands up to her employer. A contrite Mrs. Phillips pleads that she needs a friend, revealing that her breakdown was a result of feeling isolated and alone on the island. Elizabeth promises to become the needed friend. As the summer lazes on, the two women form a very special bond. But the situation becomes troublesome to Richard when it appears the relationship has gone beyond the realm of friendship. He sends Elizabeth away, leaving Chase feeling lonely, and yet reinvigorated by the whole experience.
