Powerful, works as advertised

Our soil is sun baked clay. We decided on this model after reviewing the amount of power it was sending to the really strong blades. It's comparable to gas cultivators in the same size category, without having to store 2 stroke fuel in the shed. I got it yesterday, assembly took minutes. (It's just attaching the handle really.) I gave it a test run this morning, and it chewed right through clay and some scrub grass. Pros: powerful, no fumes, quick out of box use. Does what it says on the tin. Has large market share and reliable customer service. Cons: No drag bar. I really thought there was a drag bar, which would make controlling this thing a whole lot easier. Drag bar may be the advantage gas has over this unit. It's jumpy off the gun. Because there's no throttle or speed control, it hops and tries to get away when you start it. The power buttons are slightly awkward to use and still maintain good control on startup.

It works.

I purchased the tiller with one task in mind; I planned to till the thirty year old hybrid lawn in my backyard and plant a garden in its place. The cost of the tiller was about the same as the rental of a more substantial tiller. I started with a pass four inches deep. I raked out loose grass and completed another pass. The tiller seemed to hum along just fine without strain or heating up so I decided to go eight inches deep. Eight inches is a little deeper than this tiller is built for but by making repeated passes, side by side, it seemed to be able to make the cut. I felt at the time I was abusing the little tiller but the Sun Joe showed no sign of heating up or slowing down and accomplished the task. Two weeks later I went over the whole garden again - at least eight inches deep. Total run time was over thirty hours. As near as I can tell the tiller shows no sign of wear and runs as well as when new. I cleaned and oiled the blades, folded the handle and set it in a corner of the garden shed.

Building a Better Garden

Any doubts I may have had due to the small size of the tiller evaporated when I plugged in my new best gardening buddy. Instantly my dreams to remove the collection of weeds I erroneously called a lawn became a reality. Due to existing plantings I had to be able to get in between things. Old roots were easily dislodged. This baby sized beast continues to amaze me. Florida is the land of flowers and my Sun Joe tiller is making all my gardening dreams real. As times have changed I am adding edible plants as well. Easy to operate and truly built to last.
