The planter comes with an attached basin saucer that can be filled for the plant to feed from once the root system is established. To start the plant, use convention top watering techniques and then switch to bottom watering by filling the basin as needed for the roots to wick the water up. The fill spot is more subtle than traditional self-watering planters, giving the flower pot a more acceptable appearance. Matte finish is perfect for resisting scratches, dirt, and fingerprints. I really like the pots, both the 8 inch and 10 inch in charcoal. I have already transplanted my plants into them and they look great. I especially like the opportunity to buy made in the USA pots. I would purchase these again, and highly recommend them for both appearance and sturdiness. I also like the fact that the plants can be watered from the bottom, easily avoiding water on the plant leaves. Oh yes, and the stickers on the pots pulled right off leaving no mess or traces of glue! Thanks for a great product!

I absolutely love these. I've bought about 10 in varying sizes now and they are great. The bottom reservoir keeps me from over watering plants... And also provides them water when I forget to water them. They're great for indoor plants because they help keep water from draining onto furniture and floors. I'm not the greatest plant mom yet and these planters really help make watering easier.
