Liza Minnelli seems genetically engineered for the stage. Her sparkling performances on this album are chock full of wit, passion, pathos, and unique style. Her brassy drama and husky voice are here used in a myriad of musical settings, sweet, hot, solemn, and jubilant.
Her comic sense, as evidenced on "Sara Lee," where she extols the charms of a corporate figurehead of high-calorie goodies, is infectious. Her ending remark of "Yum!" punctuates the delightful absurdity of the anthem. Aside from specialty numbers, she glows on some great pop tunes, such as John Lennon's "Imagine," and George Gershwin's "Our Love Is Here to Stay," singing with a breezy charm and sweet melancholy that touches the listener.
