"City Of Angels" is a broadway musical about Los Angeles in the late 1940s when screenwriters and cheap private eyes clung to the lower rungs. Blondes shimmer, crooners croon, corruption lurks in every mansion, and just what is an honest buck, anyway? All of this pulses to what may be Broadway's first true jazz score. The composer, Cy Coleman, has conceived both a loving tribute to the musical styles of the period-big band swing, torch songs, group vocals, frothy pop (with naughty innuendo), even a tropical Latin number-and a commentary on those styles, from a very contemporary perspective. As Rich wrote, "Coleman's score [is] a delirious celebration of jazz and pop styles sumptuously orchestrated by Billy Byers and blared out by a swinging pit band led by Gordon Lowry Harrell". All the songs are sung by the original cast on this recording.
