Great overall performance and design

I have not had this laptop for very long, but so far it's been a solid performer and exactly what I'd hoped for. With 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD, this machine is very fast to startup and is ready to go in about 10 seconds. I went from an Intel Core i5 CPU to an i7 with this one and it's a lot faster. On the left side of the laptop you've got your power connector, USB 3 port, power button, exhaust vent, headset/microphone combo jack, and an SD card reader. On the right side there's the volume up/down button, fingerprint reader, USB Type-C port, USB 3 port, and a standard HDMI port. Unfortunately, there is no optical (DVD/CD) drive, so you'll need to invest in an external optical drive if needed. This is a 2-in-1 laptop, so there are several different ways to use it. The first is your traditional laptop mode, which is pretty self-explanatory. Then, if you bend the display back with the keyboard facing down, it'll be in stand mode. Here you can play touch-based games or watch movies. Next is the tent mode, where you can show off your videos and photos or use it for video conferencing. Last, the display is folded flush with the bottom of the laptop, turning it into a tablet. As you bend the screen back you'll be asked if you want to switch to tablet mode, then it'll allow you to use it vertically or horizontally. In this mode, the computer's keyboard is disabled and everything is optimized for touch, so you can use your laptop without a mouse or keyboard. I don't use it this way very often, as the size and weight of this laptop make it kind of cumbersome to use in tablet mode. The build quality is solid and the hinges appear to be well constructed. With convertible laptops I feel like the weakest part are the hinges, so durability is important and these seem very sturdy to me. The keyboard has a nice, solid feel to it. I like that it has the backlit keys for when I'm working in low light. If you don't care for this feature, you can easily turn it off or just dim the light with the touch of the F5 button. It also has a numeric keypad, but I had to go into the Ease of Access settings in order to get the num lock to work. There is an option to "Turn on Mouse Keys to use the numeric keypad to move the mouse" and it was on. When I turned it off, the num lock button works so I can now use the numeric pad. The fingerprint reader is very responsive and once you've set it up, it's a super fast way of logging in. This laptop runs very cool and the fans are nice and quiet. Sound is good (for a laptop) and the speakers volume level is plenty loud. The display is bright and clear, though the glossy finish can be quite reflective. If you're working near a bright window this could be an annoyance. The battery life is pretty average, I only got about 5-6 hours of use before I had to plug it back in. I was watching a lot of videos though and did have the screen brightness all the way up, so lowering that and turning off the backlit keys would probably give you better results. The AC adapter for this laptop can get very hot, at least until charging is complete. Once it's done charging it's fine, so it isn't much of a concern to me. The included windows ink workspace is a pretty awesome feature and lots of fun to use! I can see using this in tablet mode with the pen that can be purchased separately. If you don't have a pen (like me), you can still draw using a mouse or your fingers. You can change some of the settings by clicking on the 'pen' symbol (bottom right) and then click on the settings at the bottom. There you can choose which hand you write with (right or left), font sizes and style, pen shortcut customizations and lots more. The Ink Workspace button is also where you will find Sticky Notes. One thing I really like about the sticky notes, is that I can quickly type in an address, click on that address and then have the windows map app open up to show me that address. I can then find directions on how to get there. It's pretty useful especially if you're in too big of a hurry to open the map app. You can also have Cortana create reminders based off your notes, but to get this to work you need to open the settings and enable insights. Overall, I'm very pleased with the performance of this laptop. It works great for all my needs and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good 2-in-1.

Beautiful laptop

The laptop arrives well packages in a sleek black box with a handle. Even receiving it was a positive addition to the experience. Unboxing was easy and setup trouble free. You have the option of a voice guided setup or a do it yourself route for those more tech friendly. I'd say our family is of the tech friendly category but we used the voice guided method because it was fun. The display is crystal clear. The sharpness and vibrant color display is like none I've seen. The device is fully setup and connected to WiFi in minutes. The processing speed is really fast. We transitioned from files to web, etc.. with no delays. The backlit keyboard is set up well. I can be picky about the placement of the keys, especially if the cause me to do something I don't want to. There were no issues at all with keys not in ideal spots. The laptop itself is very attractive and super thin. I loved that the screen can fold back to tuck under the keyboard when using in touch screen mode. Memory could be a little large but can be easily rectified with an SD card or by using the cloud. I am very pleased with the HP Envy. I highly recommend this laptop to those wanting to upgrade, starting out new or giving as a gift.

You will love this one

Converting me to an HP laptop; there are some great features with this Envy line. This, like my previous laptop is a convertible. That means I can have it in one of three positions. Clam shell (laptop), Tent (movie watching), & as a tablet (reading). This computer does exceptionally well at all three. If you're looking for a strong & fast computer for work or school this model of the Envy line is a great choice for you. There are plenty of apps & games that work great with this. I too have my personal favorites. It's ready to go out of the box. Though this is pretty heavy for a tablet, at 4.6 pounds, it sure has some room. I would like it to be lighter. Not that four pounds is heavy, just not something you want to hold on a long day. I can nearly view a whole "sheet" of paper in one of the many text editors. That is fantastic when you're trying to do reports or make spread sheets on the fly. Heck, even as an E-Reader this is large. The images & text are clear & bright. I can write notes on them, or insert them in normally. This laptop has some great features. The Bang & Olufsen speakers are an awesome addition. Nice & clean. The microphone picks up whispers, making real time communication (VOLP) a real pleasure. It has a headphone jack if you want to keep it more quiet. The fingerprint scanner is nice, I just have to get used to sliding my clean finger properly the way it wants me to; good thing there is a pin back up. The large print back lit keyboard is right there for you to clearly see in low light or bright sunshine. It's (nearly) a full size keyboard, with a number pad & positioning arrows. The keys are a pleasure to type with too. I am writing this review on the computer, & it's super smooth. I'm not going to bother people with noisy clicking, as these keys are quiet. They aren't silent, that's another type, just quiet. Streaming on this is flawless! I am surprised that with it clocking in at 1.8 Ghz, this laptop really flies. I want to keep using it, because it is such a pleasure to use. The Bluetooth on this computer is fantastic & ultra super fast. I have been swapping files between my phone, my wifi router & tower computer while writing this review. The small files under a gig, were done before I could flip back to this text editor. That's speed for a computer, let alone blue tooth! Quick access, easy on & off, a decent battery life; these are all things that make this computer stand above other ones. Having the power button tucked in & needing to be pushed & held is a great feature if you've ever bumped your power off. The touch pad is very nice, offset to the left so there is less of a chance bumping it while typing. The USB ports are snug but not tight. The HDMI outlet projects very well & quite clearly. As with any new computer, you can set up the second monitor (TV) to be as large or as small as you like; also. Eight gigs of RAM allows me to edit videos, & super huge images with out the computer choking or stalling. The 512 gig SSD drive has the computer booted & ready to go instantly, with plenty of space to add software & files. It doesn't run hot, so you can slip it into a bag or sleeve & not have those concerns. The clam shell hinges are solid & very fluid. The lid stays in place & doesn't bounce around like some others can. The touchscreen is magnificent & very precise. You can draw on it quite easily.
