In 1943 with World War II in full swing, 18 year-old Ed Hogan volunteered for the U.S. Army qualifying for an elite paratrooper division. A Dogface's War recollects his memorable journey from his hometown of Detroit, Michigan through several U.S. Army bases before embarking on a lengthy Pacific crossing to join the battle for the Philippines.

In May 1944, the author sailed from San Francisco landing in New Guinea 20 days later. After six months of training, U.S. Army forces invaded Leyte Island in the Philippines. In November 1944, Hogan's unit-H Company, 3rd Battalion of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment-received its orders to report for combat.
