A great set of portrait colors!

The Caran D’Ache Luminance are the best artist grade pencils on the market. The difference between these pencils and other pencils that are cheaper and budget friendly is that all the colors in the set are museum grade and fade resistant with the proper and real standardized testing to back it up. Their performance is almost like working with paint. You can either layer the colors on top of each other or blend them together which is something you wouldn’t find that a normal pencil does. The high quality cedar wood smells wonderful as soon as the box is opened or once sharpened. They don’t break easy. This is a set of pencils aimed towards professional artists who want to sell their work and not for beginners. For the price, they are very expensive! Try to get these on sale whenever you can as the sales are the only way to afford these. $65 is actually very reasonable for a set of 20 colors that can produce more colors than you’d think. If you’re looking for a more budget friendly option for a fade resistant set, try the Faber-Castel Polychromos or their student Goldfaber line. The Derwent Lightfast would be the direct competitor to these pencils.

These pencils are the holy grail of coloring pencils. I finially understand what all the hype surrounding luminance pencils. i will definitely be building a collection of these. They are so pigmented and lay down beautifully. It's like polychromos and prismacolors had a lightfast baby. and the color range of this set is perfection for portraits. Highly recommend!!

Quality at your fingertips!

Drawing a light sketch and coloring with these pencils is a real treat. It's one of those'IYKYK' things. Try them, even if you're one of many art students! Just get a couple favorite colors and try them out. You'll realize the quality, ability to lay down colors to achieve depth, shadows and mid-tones. Highlights can be achieved by using light touches, leaving some white space and even erasing some of the applied layers in specific areas. I used an AI program to help create a palette of desired colors for different art focuses, like landscapes, urban sketching, botanicals, etc. The portrait set has several colors you can use as cross-over colors for other focuses. They are pricey, and the lightfastness information can be found on the Caran d' Ache website. Get a blender. as well as, some good paper, like bristol. I know I'm glad I gave it a try! Enjoy your life! You only get one.
