Mark Twain had a lifelong fascination with the historical figure of the unschooled French teenager from an obscure village who conversed with angels and led her nation in a war against the English for freedom. He labored for many years to complete this novel, in his own estimation, his masterpiece. Though subsequent critics do not agree, Twain's Joan is a highly readable work that contains more than a little characteristic Twain charm and wit and passion.
