"A gripping portrayal of the South's inherent racism and a love story for queer Black girls." —Teen Vogue
Family secrets, a swoon-worthy romance, and a slow-burn mystery collide in We Deserve Monuments, the award-winning debut novel from Jas Hammonds exploring the ways racial violence can ripple down through generations.
What’s more important: Knowing the truth or keeping the peace?
Seventeen-year-old Avery Anderson is convinced her senior year is ruined when she's uprooted from her life in DC and forced into the hostile home of her terminally ill grandmother, Mama Letty. The tension between Avery’s mom and Mama Letty makes for a frosty arrival and unearths past drama they refuse to talk about. Every time Avery tries to look deeper, she’s turned away, leaving her desperate to learn the secrets that split her family in two.
While tempers flare in her avoidant family, Avery finds friendship in unexpected places: in Simone Cole, her captivating next-door neighbor, and Jade Oliver, daughter of the town’s most prominent family—whose mother’s murder remains unsolved.
As the three girls grow closer—Avery and Simone’s friendship blossoming into romance—the sharp-edged opinions of their small southern town begin to hint at something insidious underneath. The racist history of Bardell, Georgia is rooted in Avery’s family in ways she can’t even imagine. With Mama Letty's health dwindling every day, Avery must decide if digging for the truth is worth toppling the delicate relationships she's built in Bardell—or if some things are better left buried.

A Monumental Book!
"A diamond in the rough" is how Avery's mom has defined Barbell ever since the family decided to move there. It's not like the family had any other choice. The town's biggest claim to fame is that it has the richest soil on earth which makes it a great place to grow. However, with the history of the South, this claim seems insidious to the family. Matters aren't helped by the fact that Avery has been uprooted from her life in D.C and been forced to move there because of her terminally ill grandmother, Mama Letty. To aggravate matters further, the family is mixed, Avery's dad is white and her mother black, and Barbell is in the south, where there is animosity between the races, problems, issues and, possibly, extreme danger for Avery and her family. Just for being different. Avery's grandmother is not an easy person to live with (and this is stating the problem the woman has with everyone and everything lightly). If only Avery's grandmother didn't complain about everything her mother has ever done (and does) and insult's her father about his color. Will Avery's new friends and a budding romance help her overcome the history of Barbell and the stains it left behind? Or, will she be able to overcome the town and be able to blossom into a woman in her new home? We Deserve Monuments, by Jas Hammonds, is a coming of age tale in a town you want to miss (but, not the book), if only to see what the past has done to the future of the South. Especially from the eyes of a young northern girl who never understood what the South was like. The book left me with the question, “Would ignorance of this knowledge be better than having to know it?” After reading the book, you will be able to answer that question for yourself. Happy Reading!
Powerful, beautiful and heartrending
We Deserve Monuments follows Avery, a lesbian, biracial high school senior who moves to her mother's small Georgia hometown with her parents to help her dying grandmother, Mama Letty. She doesn't know Mama Letty and barely remembers her. Her mother and grandmother start fighting almost as soon as they arrive, and Avery is determined to discover their secrets and end the hostility. Avery initially resolves to complete her senior year with no involvement or drama, but makes two friends, one of whom becomes a love interest. This book is a deeply complex character-driven story which navigates intergenerational trauma, the ugliness of southern racism, white privilege, homophobia, police brutality, female friendships, family secrets, and identity. This coming-of-age debut novel is beautifully written, powerful, emotional, gripping and utterly heartrending. We Deserve Monuments deserves awards.
emotional YA fiction
Headed into senior year, Avery's life abruptly changes as her family moves from DC to small-town Georgia to be with her grandmother who's terminally ill. Things aren't going well due to longstanding conflict between Avery's mom and grandmother and no one is willing to talk to her about it. She finds solace in new friendships with her neighbor, Simone, and Jade, a classmate. As Avery begins to discover things about her family's past, her friendship with Simone turns into romance. Will Avery keep searching for the truth about what happened years ago at the risk of affecting her relationships or will she let it go? WE DESERVE MONUMENTS was a fantastic YA contemporary fiction book. The author captured an array of emotions in a raw and vulnerable way that felt so real. The characters were great. I really loved Mama Letty and how her relationship with Avery developed. The story is very character-driven so for those used to action-packed books, it may be slow, but I felt the pacing worked well overall. Many themes are explored including family, racism, trauma, and coming-of-age. Something that was revealed toward the end surprised me and was completely not on my radar which made the conclusion interesting. Upon finishing reading and reflecting, it's easy to see why the title chosen is the perfect fit. WE DESERVE MONUMENTS would be a great read for fans of YA or queer fiction.
