House Training Instructions: Step 1 – Introduce the Potty Bells to your dog by laying them on the floor, and GENTLY touching the bells to show the sound they make. Let your pup sniff at the Potty Bells. DO NOT jingle the bells loudly, as this may frighten them. Reward them with their favorite treat after this introduction. Next, hang the Potty Bells from the door handle you plan to use when letting your dog out to potty. Point to the bells and say, “Touch!” When your dog touches the bells with their nose or paw, give a treat and praise them, “Good job!” You might want to hold the treat right up to the bells so they bump the bells with their nose when going after the treat – give them a treat every time they nudge the bells. Repeat several times until they ring the bell consistently. Step 2 - Once your dog rings the bells upon your request, open the door and step outside with your dog. Immediately reward them with a treat and praise. This will teach them that ringing the bell involves going outside. Repeat this step several times. Step 3 - Now that your dog has learned the process of ringing the Potty Bells to go out, it is time to teach them to ring the bell only at potty time. The next time you sense your dog may need to potty, put them on a leash and take them through the process. Point to the Potty Bells and say, “Touch!” Open the door and walk your dog directly to where you want them to potty. Once your dog does potty, give a treat and LOTS of praise, “Good job!” Lead them directly back inside. Do not stay outside to play with them. This will make your dog think ringing the bell might mean playtime outside instead of going out to potty. Repeat this step several times. Some dogs may pick up this process very quickly while other may take several weeks. Do not give up! These bells are well made although not as loud as I'd like, they do hit the door loud enough to alert me to the dog's need to go out and as my smaller dog learned they work even when she just wants out to go out, the larger dog has her own way of alerting me that we've used for 10 years so she won't use the bells. It didn't take long for the little one to learn to use them(less than a day) once she got the idea that she goes out when they ring.
