The goat (Capra hircus) is known as the poor man's cow. The goat is an animal that adopts itself readily to almost any climate. It is hardy, prolific breeder and can be cheaply reared. The goat eats a class of fodder on which other animals would starve and for that reason, goat rearing is followed as an occupation by a large section of small holders and landless labourers in rural areas. A goat provides a dependable source of income to 40 percent of the rural population below the poverty line in India and two many who do not possess any land.
