Its distinctive seed heads look like a bottlebrush, making this species popular as an ornamental grass. In the wild, it is found growing in wooded and shaded areas, but can also be grown in full sun if need be. This grass is a cool-season perennial grass and ripens to a straw color in the summer. Its distinctive, brush-like seed heads make this species popular as an ornamental plant. The genus name "Hystrix" means "hedgehog," a reference to the prickly seed heads. The species name "patula" means "spread out," because of the widely spaced seeds.

Arrived quick and sprouted
I always do a test of my seeds to make sure they are even viable and sprout before I go through with planting them and waiting. I ordered about 10 different types of prairie grasses (this is one of them), and they all have sprouted nicely, so I know they are good seeds. The shipment arrived very quickly, it only took a couple days from when I ordered. The seeds are packaged very nicely in gold packets. Very happy with the seeds, would order again!

Bottlebrush Grass
Germination took 26 days indoors with a low percentage of seeds sprouting. Seeds were unstratified. I have the bulk of my purchased bottlebrush seeds in cold moist stratification and will see how that goes.
