Opened my eyes to pet food industry

I read this book a long time ago. I still have a copy in my bookcase. It was shattering to read how pet food companies produce dog food and why (profits). Suffice to say that as hard of a read it may be for you - it's important to read all or as much of it as you can. It will change how you read labels on pet food and more knowledge is better. Shortly after I read this book one of my dogs was diagnosed with diabetes. Dogs always get type 1 and are insulin dependent for the rest of their lives. The vet said she had to be on a food they carried (SD) to regulate her blood sugar. I read the label and at the 3rd ingredient I said no way am I feeding this. Cellulose (wood shavings) ground peanut shells and corn. Corn for a diabetic. Corn. High in sugar corn. What? I still shake my head at that. I found a super high quality, low glycemic commercial pet food and augmented her diet with quality protein and carbs. I lost her to cancer two years later but at the time of her death an ultrasound showed she had no internal organ damage at all from the diabetes. None. The radiologist had a hard time believing she was diabetic. My point is - reading this book helped me to discern quality ingredients from garbage filler put in food under the guise of RX or vet recommended food. A valuable read for any responsible pet parent.
