Journey now to Mackinac Island where...
A Tangled Gilded Age Love Story Unfolds.

Although the Winds of Mackinac Inn has been in her mother’s family for generations, Maude Welling’s father refuses to let her run it without the guidance of a husband. So she seeks to prove her worth and independence by working incognito as a maid at the Grand Hotel.

Undercover journalist Ben Steffans, posing as a wealthy industrialist, pursues a story about impoverished men chasing heiresses at the famed hotel.  While undercover, he becomes attracted to an intriguing maid. By an act of heroism Ben endears himself to the closed-mouthed islanders—including Maude—and he digs deep for his story.

But when scandal threatens, will the growing love between Maude and Ben be scuttled when truths are revealed?

Historical romance that will sweep you away!

Travel back to the summer of 1895 to Mackinac Island. Envision and immerse yourself in the life and culture of the townspeople who live year-round on this tiny peace of heaven. At least, I can imagine heaven would look like this a bit. You will fall in love with the townspeople as much as I did. And as a side note: I really need to travel to Mackinac and see it for myself! Carrie's stories vividly describe the area so well! If this is your first story by Carrie Fancett Pagels, I will tell you, you will not be disappointed! I also encourage you to read her earlier books! Carrie is a talented writer! Maude Welling is a lovely young woman with a broken heart, or maybe not. Maude is courageous, strong, determined, and faithful to the core. She takes care of her father and younger brother. She also helps run their inn. Her younger brother, Jack, is quite the character and runner! I was quite taken with his eccentric and energetic behavior! Oh, to have his energy! Journalist Ben Steffan comes to the island on an undercover assignment as a wealthy businessman with a new name! But things tend to take a different turn once he meets the lovely Maude! Ben and Maude discover a few mysteries and scandal around Mackinac Island. But they also discover something much more valuable between them. What starts out as tender friendship grows and beautifies into a lasting love. Loved this book!

I absolutely loved this book! This is by far my favorite book by author Carrie Fancett Pagels, and I've read them all. The intrigue of the secret identities, the neighborly, family-like love between the islanders and how they look out for each other, the impish little brother Jack, Maude, and the stranger who has unwittingly captured her heart. All come together to create one of the best books I've read in a long time. Maude is more upset than heartbroken, that her supposed fiance' has come home a married man because her father will not let her run the family inn without a husband. She has to prove to him that she can do it on her own. She must keep him from selling The Winds of Mackinac Inn that has been part of her mother's family for generations, it is her home, it is where her heart belongs. The book is fast paced, filled with mystery and secrets that abound at every turn. The romance is heartwarming and real. I won't give spoilers in a review. I will highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Historical Christian fiction. I loved this look at life on Mackinac Island in the late 1890's. I loved the little winks at characters from previous books by this author. If you haven't read anything by Ms. Pagels before, this book is a great place to start.

Makes You Wish You Were There

The author doesn't fail to impress me with her descriptive words that make me feel like I am part of the story on Mackinac Island. I love Maude and her spunkiness. Her little brother, Jack keeps you on your toes and provides some laughs. All the characters bring a uniqueness to life and are believable. The time period is interesting and I can envision the clothing. The story shows that honesty from the beginning is always the best, but through Christ forgiveness is possible. A very enjoyable read that has been well researched. I received a complimentary copy from the author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
