As seen in one of the pics, there is a manufacturer placed hole on the bottom of the compartment closest to ones back for water lines or whatever ya want. It doesnt effect any compartment except the one, so your smaller items can be safely stored anywhere but that compartment and there is plenty of space elsewhere. Im not sure Id want to use it for really long hikes bc the shoulder straps altho padded might get uncomfortable after awhile. In the pics of the pack, there are a first aid kit, blood clotting pack, several mylar blankets, a beanie, monster tape and most important, Duct tape and yet to get are some larger gauze bandages and a large compression bandage
