Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art

This was better than I thought it would be. It covered lots of aspects of design, philosophy and techniques of comic book creation in an entertaining and graphically effective way. I knew much of the material intuitively from a lifetime of reading comics and going to art school, but it was helpful to have everything spelled out and put in context for me (by the cartoon version of the author). I thought it covered a lot of ground without being preachy.
