Sir Dudley North (1641-1691) was an English economist. His ability and knowledge of commerce attracted the attention of the government. During the Tory reaction under Charles II he was one of the sheriffs forced on the city of London with an express view to securing verdicts for the crown in state trials. His Discourses Upon Trade (1691) is one of the earliest attempts to theorise as a whole the workings of a market economy in England.
