Pre-Owned The Color Purple

The Color Purple, written by Alice Walker is about two sisters named Celie and Nettie that struggles throughout their life. Their mother passed away when they were young. And since Celie was the oldest in the family, she had to watch over the house, cook, and nurture her siblings. Mister came along, moved in, and started taking over tasks. He demanded that Nettie have an affair with him, but she refused. And since she refused, she got kicked out of her mother's house and sent to Africa. Many slow miserable years passed by that Celie had to cater to Mister. He was also abusing her, but she couldn't do anything about it because she was scared, weak, and didn't know how to fight back. Mister's ex girlfriend appeared at their house one evening named Shug Avery, with luggage ready to move in. She made everything better for Celie, but not too good because Nettie was not there. She helped Celie out a lot. She taught Celie how to read and write, she made Mister top beating her, and she made her believe that there was a God. One day while Mister and Shug's husband was out, Shug went to go check the mailbox and noticed that there was a letter from Nettie. Shug also found many other letters that were hid in Mister's trunk that were never opened or read. They both spent time reading and responding back to Nettie's letters that night. Shug and Celie developed such an unbreakable relationship that Celie moved out to go live with Shug. Many lovely years passed, but then she had to pay her hometown a visit. Even though she did not want to visit, she had to attend Sofia's mother funeral, and Mister was there also. He payed Celie much more attention now than before because he missed all that she had ever done for him. Celie and Nettie wrote each other letters back and forth, day and night wondering when and if they'll ever see each other again. I reccommend this novel because not only is it good, but it also provides a lesson that when situations are at their worst, they can get better.
