going out on a limb the producers of Rome for HBO tried to make it as if u were in ROME 2000 years ago with painstaking research.
The characters, actions, wardrobe, surroundings, behaviors might be shocking in modern day morality, especially with slavery. However, that is what existed back then...they dont even show the colliseum (which wasnt built at that time).
my only wish is that the BBC didnt back out of this joint project, because they had just covered Ocavian Ceasar (later named Augustus by the Senatate) rising to power and ended the series there. 2 things of note: July is named July in honor of Julious Ceasar (the 1st one) and August was renamed as well in honor of the 2nd Ceasar (thou protrayed in this series as Octavian..see note above)
They do an awesome job showing the military wisdom (and some would say luck) of Julius Ceasar as well as the vast political corruption needed/used to change Rome from a republic (no sole leader) to am Empire (ruled by a single emporer)
