Traditional Backpacker

I have found the old style external packs very functional over the years so when it was time to get back into hiking I went with the Kelty which has always been the pack to own. Functional; lots of tie down space; lots of compartments for organizing and easier access to what you need; frame expandability. Has it all. I also like being able to keep the external frame pack well off my back for comfort/ventilation in hot weather.

Oldschool

I have owned and heavily used a Tioga bought at the original REI warehouse in Seattle since 1974 and can't imagine using anything else. Just viewed your photos above for this product and I was amazed to see that the majority of users in those pics are carrying their packs WAY too high on their backs - I mean come on folks it's called a HIP belt for a reason. It ain't a waist belt midriff belt or whatever.

Easy to pack where are the replacement parts?

The easiest way to pack an external frame that won't lean easily is to place it horizontal on the ground with the straps/waist belt facing down. I have never had a problem leaning my pack against a tree but in the winter with deep snow you might want to avoid going too close to tree wells. The only issue i have with Kelty is the lack of replacement parts. Kelty currently (2/28/2022) is out of hip belts and shoulder straps. This can be quite a problem for some of us.
