Shimano accomplished this by redesigning the derailleur, from the position of the cable anchor bolt, to the design of the spring mechanism. These changes create greater leverage, resulting in a stronger pull, a smaller shifter stroke, and easier actuation. Overall this change reduces the shifting effort required by 47% compared to the previous generation. The RD-9000 also features a carbon fiber cage, resulting in a sleight weight reduction, which provides vibration dampening and offers crisp, lightweight shifting. Shimano's Dura-Ace provides smooth shifting up and down the cassette, on demand.
