The time period is 1920's or 30's. Toby is an 11 year old orphan. He runs away from his aunt and uncle to join a circus after a disagreement with them. He finds out later that they really do love him. He learns to work hard and becomes part of a circus act. He has an interesting time with a mischievous chimpanzee. He later is reunited with his aunt and uncle.
