Classic Horse Story for Young People

I am using "My Friend Flicka" to interest several young gentlemen in reading, since they are into horses. The vocabulary is just challenging enough to where we can learn some new words as we read along. The drawings are very nice, and we've already tried to duplicate some of them and have mounted our drawings on the wall. Of course this is a classic old story, originally published around 1940, but it is a timeless classic, interesting to children of any time period, especially those who have some experience around horses. It teaches kindness to animals which our students today need to learn more about. I am glad to have this book available when I work with students to read together, a little at a time. This is a paperback book, easy to hold in our hands as we read it. The sentences are long, often one sentence being one paragraph, which encourages students to write longer sentences and be more expressive in their own writing. I often stop to ask the student what a pronoun refers back to so they learn about antecedents with pronouns. Also I stop to ask them what the author meant in a certain paragraph to monitor comprehension.
