His choice of material includes numerous surprises that all work stunningly. Who knew that the melody of Fastball's "The Way" would be such a natural for the steel guitar? Less of a surprise is his version of the Band's "Whispering Pines," a cover as achingly gorgeous as can be, short of Richard Manuel singing it. There are also dips into the pools of the Byrds, Bob Seger, the Grateful Dead, and Duane Eddy.
