Key item features

Bruce Lewis, one of the first professional cartoonists to bring the manga-style to the United States, takes an entirely fresh approach to the subject that's perfect for beginners.

Manga is all the rage, the hippest and most popular form of comic book drawing today. That's why so many aspiring illustrators long to master the style. But too many of the available how-to manuals don't offer the appropriate help for the westerner-or understand which products are available to artists here. Bruce Lewis, an American who's stepped in manga culture, offers something different: an excitingly visual from-the-ground-up explanation of manga and its roots, the conventions of manga illustrations, and advice on developing an individual style. His handbook builds skills, from drawing the basic figure to creating believable characters, from setting the scene to developing the story. There's even information on creating dramatic lettering. By the time artists have worked their way through this essential guide, they'll feel confident drawing their own manga works and know how to get them published too.

Good book, BUT......

Very good book on drawing Manga, but the book has a female figure which is topless on the cover and also a seductive female near the bottom of the page with her back turned. This may be okay for some, but.... for a 11 yr old boy, NO Way. I used a black Sharpie marker and colored it in, so he could not see them w/ some nice tops on. The next issue, was a femaie and a male figure in the center of the book, both are in the nude, (it is for anatomical positiioning, but too raw for me). Now, don't get me wrong, very good book for learning techniques for Manga, but as I said earlier, I colored the pictures in with the marker in a bikini like top and a nice grass skirt with underwear on and the male with swim trunks. Hahahaha! But you decide, my son thought the drawings were placed in there from the printer of the book.

Preachy, but good.

Compared to most how-to manga books, I've read this one takes a diffrent approach. The author compares western comic styles to that of what we think of as manga. Giving a highlight and a diffrencer between the two. However, the book seems slightly preachy when the issue of how most beginners draw comes up. Saying that it is only ok to bend rules when basics are known. While it is true many artist develop their own style by at times disregarding basics and not learning them at all.
