We had Geeni lightbulbs before this, that work without a Hub. We thought it would be better to have bulbs that directly connected to our Wi-Fi router, but then we had to go through the process of individually connecting the Geeni lightbulbs after every power outage and decided it was time for a change. With this hub system, the hub and lightbulbs stay connected to the network even after a power outage. There are also a lot more automated features with this system. so we'd recommend these over Geeni if you're looking to connect more than 2 smart lightbulbs to your network.
