With my new public persona in place, things finally started happening for me, and in late 2005 I moved back to Los Angeles, with a better apartment ... and a better outlook. I still didn't have much money at that point, so I didn't bother to furnish the place properly-nor would I, going forward. All I had was a bed and a recliner chair-I didn't even have a television but that didn't bother me at all. Especially since I was working all the time anyway. One thing I did need was access to the Internet, but when I called the cable company on one of my first days in the new place, I realized I couldn't afford for them to come over and install it for me.... I'm not a computer savvy guy; I don't know much about technology or any of that stuff. So, I started going down to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Sunset and Fairfax instead. They had free Wi-Fi, and it was just a short walk from my place. I remember that the coffee shop opened at 6:00 in the morning, but I was usually there at 5:30, because their Wi-Fi also worked if you sat just outside the door.... Homeless people would walk by staring at me, and at first the staff seemed to be wondering what I was doing there when they arrived to open up for the day. Over time, it kind of became my thing, and everyone knew I was working out of there. All kinds of people stalled to show up-celebrities who wanted to release something to the public, and journalists wanting to find out more about who I was. In fact, one of the first people to come down there and talk to me early one morning was Lindsay Lohan. She was filming something in L.A at the time, but seemingly she kept showing up late to set. The director eventually decided he'd had enough and wrote an open letter telling her to get her act together. When she came down to the Coffee Bean that morning, it was to explain that she was en route to set, and that she was on time. "I don't have time to stay," she said with a laugh. "I'll never make it if I do." And just like that, site was gone. Book jacket.
