I Remember Clifford

Often viewed as the successor to trumpeter Clifford Brown's legacy, it is easy to forget that Lee too died at a very untimely early age. During his 33 years he built a glowing reputation worldwide due in no small measure to his appearances with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers who criss crossed the world during the late fifties and sixties. Clifford had died in 1956 and the Classic Benny Golson tune 'I Remember Clifford' became a sort of official hymn from the entire world wide jazz community. Golson was a band mate of Lee in the seminal 1958 version of the Messengers and both are featured here in this recording made during one of Blakey's frequent European tours.
