In my long culinary life, I have never bought instant mashed potatoes since when I have eaten them in the past, they always tasted funny, like cafeteria food. I recently bought a box of these Hungry Jack potatoes to feed a sourdough starter. Since I only needed a few spoonsful, I had a lot of it left. I decided to give them a try the next time I wanted mashed potatoes to go with roast. I was amazed. They tasted excellent, nothing like I thought instant mashed potatoes would taste like. Perhaps it was cooking them with butter and serving them with gravy with a roast, but I could not tell the difference. My wife was not as impressed since she prefers mashed potatoes that are a bit chunky, but she also admitted they tasted great.
