The Royal Canadian Mint produces this 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf as part of its most famous coin program. The coin is made from 99.99% fine gold and has a weight of 1/4 troy oz. Thus, the Gold Maple Leafs are highly-sought after gold bullion coins, beloved by collectors and investors all over the world due to the coin’s incredibly beautiful, yet simple reverse design, and its high purity.
RCM introduced the Gold Maple Leaf program in 1979, and the coin was manufactured from .999 fine gold extracted only from Canadian sources. The fractional 1/4 oz size was released in 1982 and beginning with this year the coins are produced of .9999 pure gold. During that period, the only fine gold coins available on the market were the South African Krugerrands, but they were difficult to obtain due to the political tension in South Africa. Thereby, the Canadian Gold Maple Leafs quickly became a popular collectible with an iconic representation - the beloved Maple Leaf.
The obverse displays the profile image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II based on the coin’s mintage year: 1982-1989 designed by Arnold Machin, 1990-2002 - Dora de Pédery-Hunt, and from 2003 issues - Susanna Blunt). The bottom of Her Majesty’s portrait incorporates the initials of the artist and is encircled by the engravings “5 Dollars”, “Elizabeth II” and the mintage year.
The reverse showcases one, large, yet very detailed maple leaf, surrounded by the inscriptions “Canada”, purity and weight marks. Starting with 2014, the coin also features the latest RCM bullion security enhancement, the micro-engraved laser maple leaf mark, containing the last two digits of the year. The releases from 2015 also display the radially lined background.
