The hot plate starts to heat up instantly! There are 2 zipper compartments on the outside for utensils or the such, which is really nice. It comes with instructions that make it accident proof and tells you what containers you can use on the hot plate, such as glass, aluminum, cardboard, plastic, etc. I love this warming bag!
