When I was first diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, I'll be honest: I didn't think there was much I could do to change anything about it. I felt like the disease would control my life now, and I would have to accept it. My research for this book has proven me wrong. My hope in writing this book is to instill in Parkinson's patients a practical, day-by-day approach to managing Parkinson's disease, and to recognize small victories as progress.
We have seen technology become an essential tool for individuals living with Parkinson's Disease. From rollators that offer more independence than walkers, to wearable devices that record valuable information to help doctors evaluate a condition without expensive hospitalization, and to smartphone apps to manage medication and track symptoms, each advancement allows patients to live an independent life longer and safer at home.
Healthcare is more accessible with the acceptance of telemedicine for routine visits, relieving stress caused by in-person visits. Online resources offer homebound patients the opportunity to share experiences and get helpful advice from other patients. These advancements are an invaluable resource to restore a sense of control and normalcy to a patient's life.
Looking to the future, hope for a cure is on the horizon. There's extensive research underway in laboratories and hospitals worldwide, with promising developments in gene therapy, stem cell research, and innovative treatment approaches.
