it is charcoal very safe and easy to use however very small interior its good for a family of four or five and I still would maybe purchase a little bigger it can also be a very nice camping tool to bring along with you however keep instructions all the time, it does get rusty which I have am ick when it comes to that I mean I don't think all bbqs do maybe this is just temporaryuse for a couple times than probably throw it not sure your preference!!! or just cover it so when it does rain its safe!!!!
