Use a collar ... not a cone

We had our 6mo old Lab Retriever spayed and used this collar to prevent her from licking/opening the wound. It worked perfectly! It didn't restrict her otherwise and even allowed her to go in and out of the doggy-door to do her businesses! Unlike a cone, she seemed to enjoy it … even seemingly using it as a pillow when she slept. I highly recommend this collar.
