Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms caused by hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies: runny nose; sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; itching of the nose or throat. One of the most effective over-the-counter antihistamines, diphenhydramine is the generic version of Benadryl. Diphenhydramine can also be used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Like Benadryl, these diphenhydramine tablets will likely cause drowsiness.
