Key item features

Part memoir and part investigative report, Eating Animals is the groundbreaking moral examination of vegetarianism, farming, and the food we eat every day that inspired the documentary of the same name.

Bestselling author Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his life oscillating between enthusiastic carnivore and occasional vegetarian. For years he was content to live with uncertainty about his own dietary choices but once he started a family, the moral dimensions of food became increasingly important.

Faced with the prospect of being unable to explain why we eat some animals and not others, Foer set out to explore the origins of many eating traditions and the fictions involved with creating them. Traveling to the darkest corners of our dining habits, Foer raises the unspoken question behind every fish we eat, every chicken we fry, and every burger we grill.

Part memoir and part investigative report, Eating Animals is a book that, in the words of the Los Angeles Times, places Jonathan Safran Foer "at the table with our greatest philosophers" -and a must-read for anyone who cares about building a more humane and healthy world.

The best food book yet

For anyone curious about the ethics of what we eat, Eating Animals is a must read. Motivated by the arrival of his new son, Foer spent 3 years investigating animal farming across America - talking to ranchers and reformers alike along the way. What he ultimately found is eye-opening: he reveals the environmental, health, and moral impacts of our current meat production system. But Foer does not preach. Instead, he explores the stories of how we eat, the values that our food choices embody, and the positive decisions we can make to reform America's food supply. Readers who enjoyed Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemna or Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation will find plenty of new material here. And any reader will find a highly readable, beautifully written call for reform of our diet. Destined to become a classic.

Such great writing!

Foer is a wonderful writer and skillfully takes you through his ideas and thoughts on the subject of eating animals. My daughter is vegetarian. I am not. We both enjoyed this book - one of the few where we both were compelled to mark up the text and write in the margins. It is a fascinating subject and you will become so much more aware of the food choices we make (and those that are made for us.) Highly recommend for anyone interested in the connection between our food and ourselves.

exceptional

Great book, written exquisitely. The only thing i did't like was that he suggested that the only way to truly stop the evil works in factory farms is to become vegetarian, i disagree, but still recommend this book.
