Key item features

The Turbans were one of the many groups signed to the Herald/Ember group of labels based in New York. The labels were formed in 1953 by Jack Angel, Al Silver and Jack Braverman who had all been involved in either the A&R side of the music business or the manufacturing side. The words "doo" and "wop" are taken from the chanted lyrics used by group members behind the lead singer and in The Turbans' When You Dance. The track is now acknowledged as one of the first records to feature these words. It remained on the Hot 100 for 21 weeks peaking at No.33 and two weeks later entered the R&B chart where it climbed to No.3 in an eight week run.

Al Silver's other successful mid fifties group was The Nutmegs. They were formed in 1954 and signed with Herald in 1955, hitting the big time almost immediately with the crossover smash A Story Untold, one of the most enduringly popular of all doowop hits. The disc peaked at No.2 on Billboard's R&B chart and unusually for a group on Herald the follow up, Ship Of Love, also cruised to No.13 in the R&B charts.
