Only trouble with this modem is that the driver cannot be installed in the normal way on a Windows 7 computer. The driver has to be loaded this way: Connect modem to USB port Put US robotics setup CD in cd drive Start button devices and printers right click on modem Properties hardware tab Properties General tab change settings Update driver Brows my computer for driver software Select D: in drop down list install close

a new laptop was required, but internal modems no longer were available, even though my remote isolated location requires a dialup connection. It may not be fast, but at least I am connected and it is relatively secure. this USRobotics 56K USB 2.0 External Modem solved the problem. The device is clean looking, white, has a rj11 attached to a small cord making connections easy. for the initial connection connect directly to the computer usb - use the install advice of other reviewers (not the one included in package). then after the installation is successful, on my computer, the modem works well even connected to the remote usb 4plex adapter. It is nearly as good as an internal modem because it is out of the way connected to the adapter, and I can leave it at home when I am out and about where I can use the free wifi that is so readily available.
